Mad Angel OSRS Guide: Mechanics, Gear and Drops
Mad Angel OSRS boss guide: Fallen From Grace requirements, how to reach Ardeaglais, every special attack, best gear and the Hallowfell drop rates.
The Mad Angel is the temperamental golem that guards the cathedral of Ardeaglais on Wyrmscraig, and it is one of the most mechanic-driven bosses added to Old School RuneScape in 2026. Its mechanics reward clean reactions with guaranteed accuracy and guaranteed max hits, so even modest gear can kill it quickly once you understand the fight. Here is everything you need: requirements, travel, every special attack, gear, drops and the mistakes that cost players kills.
Who is the Mad Angel?
Released on 29 July 2026 alongside the island of Wyrmscraig, the Mad Angel is a golem built by Elessia to watch over the islanders after she left. It was meant to protect them, but it is unrefined and temperamental, and it attacks anyone who wakes it. It lives in Ardeaglais, the cathedral on the southern side of the island.
You first fight a weaker version during the quest Fallen From Grace. After the quest, a much stronger, repeatable version can be woken for loot. The boss itself was designed by a player for the Player Designed Island Competition, and its signature ideas, a "perfect parry" and a directional weakness, made it into the final game.
| Stat | Quest version | Post-quest version |
|---|---|---|
| Combat level | 270 | 588 |
| Hitpoints | 565 | 755 |
| Max hit | 31 | 31 |
| Attack styles | Melee, Magic | Melee, Magic |
| Size | 3x3 | 3x3 |
| Weakest melee defence | Crush | Crush |
| Elemental weakness | Earth (15%) | Earth (15%) |
It is a golem, which matters for weapon choice, and it is immune to poison, venom, freezing and cannons.
Requirements
To fight the repeatable Mad Angel you must finish Fallen From Grace. That quest needs the following (none of these can be boosted):
- 62 Sailing
- 60 Crafting
- 53 Mining
- 47 Runecraft
- Completion of Pandemonium
For the boss itself, the wiki's strategy page recommends:
- 60 Attack and 60 Strength
- 43 Prayer as a minimum for Protect from Melee and Protect from Magic
- 70 Prayer and 70 Defence so you can use Piety
You can plan any missing levels with our skill calculator.
Getting there
Ardeaglais teleport scrolls are the fastest option. They drop from the boss itself, can be stored in the master scroll book, and only work after Fallen From Grace.
- Slayer ring to Wyrmscraig Cavern, just beneath the cathedral. Either use the golem to the north and climb the stairs, or leave the cave to the west and run to the boss.
Necklace of passage to Wyrmscraig, then run west and climb the rocks to the cathedral's front door. This shortcut needs 54 Agility and requires you to have mined the rocks at the top first.
How the fight works
Turn off auto-retaliate before you start. If you leave it on, your character can get dragged off the blast tile and you will fail that mechanic.
The Mad Angel mainly uses melee. With Protect from Melee on, its standard attacks drop from a max hit of 31 to just 5. After every three standard attacks it uses one of three special attacks, and each one has a reward for handling it well.
Sweep attack
The angel freezes and pulls its sword back to one side, then cleaves both the side you were on and the side the blade came from. It repeats this four times, or six once enraged. Dodge by moving to the side opposite the sword, or behind it.
- Dodging to the side (not behind) makes your next attack 100% accurate, and any roll below half your max hit is raised to half.
- Protect from Melee halves the damage if you get caught.
- If the boss is backed against a wall, the safe tiles may be unreachable. Click the middle tile inside its 3x3 on the correct side to still earn the buff.
Blast attack
A ball of light flies toward a tile marked by a shadow on the floor. If it lands unchallenged, it explodes for 30+ damage across the whole arena. Stand on the marked tile to bounce it back into the boss for 18 to 22 damage; done correctly, this happens three times per blast sequence. Protect from Magic halves the explosion, but the angel keeps using its standard attack during this special, so you can still take melee hits at the same time.
High-damage setups sometimes fail this mechanic on purpose, since the fixed bounce damage is low and failing brings the next sweep or smite punish around sooner. It speeds up kills but costs more supplies.
Smite attack
The angel draws its sword to its chest and charges lightning. Simply having Protect from Magic up cuts the damage by about 75%. Turning it on exactly as the strike lands negates the damage entirely and guarantees a max hit on your next attack.
- The perfect timing is 4 ticks after the blue crackle first appears around its hands.
- A visual cue many players use is the small flap of its wings once they are fully extended.
- One-tick flicking Protect from Magic through the whole animation also works, and is easier to apply to the triple strike.
Enrage phase
At 350 hitpoints (about 45%), the angel enrages at the next opportunity, shown by a "...!" message above its head. It immediately chains all three specials back to back, and every special after that comes out faster. The smite becomes three strikes: the second lands 4 ticks after the first and the third 2 ticks after that.
Recommended gear
Melee is the simplest and strongest way to kill the Mad Angel. Because it is a golem, golembane weapons like the granite hammer and barronite mace get bonus accuracy and damage against it, and its crush defence is its lowest. Lower-tier gear performs better here than at most bosses, because the guaranteed accuracy and max hits from mechanics do a lot of the work.

A few notes from the strategy guide:
- The Bandos godsword is preferred over the dragon warhammer because it hits far more consistently here.
- Lower-damage setups benefit from swapping weapons mid-fight, for example using the dual macuahuitl when accuracy is guaranteed after a side dodge.
- Most ranged and magic setups struggle against its defences, though the twisted bow can take advantage of the guaranteed-accuracy windows.
- Full Blood Moon armour is a strong pick for lower-level players.
If you are working toward an Infernal cape upgrade, our Inferno service can take that off your plate.

| Item | Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Always | 25 to 35 per kill | |
| 1/25 | Teleport straight back to the boss | |
| 1/25 | Stays on the ground for 3 hours | |
| 1/127 | Tradeable two-handed sword | |
| 1/1000 | Boss lair display and light source | |
| 1/2000 | Pet, a tiny Mad Angel |
Hallowfell
Hallowfell is the headline drop. It needs 75 Attack and has a passive that lets each swing also hit up to two other unique enemies for up to half your max hit each. The extra hits can land on five tiles: the three in front of you and the two beside you. Against groups of three or more targets, that works out to roughly double the damage in theory. Unlike the Scythe of Vitur, the extra hits only apply to separate enemies, so it won't multi-hit one large monster.
The Jar of Light can be placed in a boss lair display in your house's Achievement Gallery to show off a model of the Mad Angel. The boss has five collection log slots in total, and Combat Achievements for it were added on 26 August 2026.
Common mistakes
- Leaving auto-retaliate on. It drags you off the blast tile and wastes free damage.
- Dodging behind instead of to the side. Getting behind avoids the sweep, but only a side dodge grants the accuracy buff.
- Fighting with its back to a wall. Keep it in the open so the sweep's safe tiles stay reachable.
- Keeping Protect from Magic on through the smite. You take reduced damage, but you lose the guaranteed max hit that a well-timed switch gives you.
- Not planning for the enrage. At around 45% it fires all three specials in a row, so have prayer points and health ready.
- Losing your grave. The wiki notes a bug where graves can appear at the Wyrmscraig dock or another dock instead of the boss room, so check the world map after a death.
